For all my readers who are interested in historical photos research for genealogy and family history.

This often neglected type of research is valuable to not only find a photo of an ancestor in a library or archive, it also helps to provide a historical context for their lives.

Anyway, take a look at the brand spankin' new Photos! resources page. It is full of several informational articles, many resource links, as well as links to online image and photo collections that contain millions of photographic images - all about researching photos to find articles about our ancestors and their surroundings.

So check it out!

You have inspired me to start a new blog. My cousin found about 100 pictures in his basement he aunt had saved. We have identified many of them but there are some we just don't know. Hancock County, Tennessee is not a genealogical hot spot and I wish there were more people from there interested. However, I am as that is where my dad's family is from. My mom also had a lot of pictures that are now in my possession. They are from Wichita Falls, Texas. I think I will post a picture a day, Most of the pictures are from the early 1900's. So thanks for the idea and the links that I will be researching.

Day 3 on my photo journey. http://ancestorphotobox.blogspot.com/

As I have been finding old photos, I have wondered about the utilization of the "photo-shop" technology now available and applying this wonderful technology to enhance these photos bringing them literally to life - however "changing" the original photo. Am I doing a dis-service or adulterating the original?

There are lots of opinions on this Elaine. And to each his/her own in my opinion. I almost always alter an old photo just to freshen it up for one thing. But I always keep the originals - hence make a copy first and then alter the copy. That's the safest route in case you change your mind. Also, sometimes people can crop out important research info if they are not careful. You might want to read the article "Are You Cropping Too Much?" The link is on the Photos! Page on my site here. Thanks for the great question.l

Thanks, for the reinforcement. Thanks for the link....and I couldn't agree more...often valuable information is lost when we focus too closely on our "subject" and don't look at the surroundings, which often tell their own stories, Aged, Yellowed or faded photos do not reproduce well, but we can certainly bring these types of photos back to life. The originals are PRICELESS! Thanks for taking your time to comment. I do enjoy your Ancestor Hunt wealth of information! Keep it going.
