Was your ancestor or relative a "radical", or a fighter for freedom for different causes? There is a new website that makes available online many alternative or underground newspapers that have been digitized and are now online and free to search,
The Independent Voices website - "An Open Access Collection of an Alternative Press" is quite a project and now has about 770 titles, about 85% of which are from the U.S. At the time of publication of this article the collection contains 17,651 issues with a total of 484,266 pages.
From their website:
"Independent Voices is an open access digital collection of alternative press newspapers, magazines and journals, drawn from the special collections of participating libraries. These periodicals were produced by feminists, dissident GIs, campus radicals, Native Americans, anti-war activists, Black Power advocates, Hispanics, LGBT activists, the extreme right-wing press and alternative literary magazines during the latter half of the 20th century."
Whether you are interested in searching for genealogy reasons, or for historical education - it is fascinating reading.
