An old proverb states that "the eyes are the windows into the soul." A genealogy corollary is that "a photo is a window into the lives of your ancestors."

Old photos are important to a complete research, whether they are portraits of your ancestors or historical photos for the period when they lived. And it is important that one attempts to understand the environment that surrounds our ancestors' lives if one wants to truly appreciate what they went through.

So where can they be found? Obviously the best resource is our own photo albums and those that our relatives possess. But what about other resources? Many archives, historical societies, libraries and genealogical societies have collections of old photos. And in the past few years there has been a massive movement towards making these historical photo collections available online. Some have search capabilities where you can actually put in a surname or a location, name of a building or historical event and find what is available.

During December, 2020 I have been adding and updating the links to online photo collections that are available to search for free. There are a total of 4,105 links to online photo archives that I have found for the U.S., with 600 of those links added since the previous update. I will update these lists in approximately six months.

Here is the list of links to these free online collections for each state:

For those of you who follow The Ancestor Hunt, you know that I rarely if ever promote products. However, I do like to make you aware of new offerings that you might wish to explore.

Just recently, about a week ago, I was introduced to a new App called WhooWe. Rather than trying to explain it, I was so interested in it, that I interviewed the CEO, Dan Qualiano, and he can tell you all about it.

In my opinion, I would try out the Whoowe App. I am doing so, and doing a complete analysis. Since it’s free, you don’t have anything to lose, except maybe a little time. But the benefits appear to be very very good.

Here's the interview:

Hello, Dan. Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. Could you provide a short history of the Whoowe company and its mission?

Thank you for the opportunity to introduce the whoowe mobile app, Kenneth. In late 2014, My wife, Kimberly, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. She was 10 years younger than I and seemingly the healthiest member of our family. She exercised regularly, ate well, and always tried to leave people better than she found them. She was a wonderful wife and mother to our two young children. Over the next two and a half years of getting the diagnosis, we did everything we could to defeat the disease; lifestyle & diet changes, conventional and holistic treatments, supplements, and anything else that could possibly be helpful. Unfortunately, in November of 2017, we lost the battle and Kim was gone. From that time on, I frequently thought about the fact that our grandchildren, who do not yet exist, would never get to truly know their grandmother. Her vibrant personality, sense of humor, and the many little mannerisms that made her so unique and special. Sure, I could show some photos and home videos one day but younger generations are not really interested in looking through photo albums and hours of videos anymore and still wouldn’t really “get to know” the person. We live in a snapshot world of technology now, scrolling quickly to what we want and getting instant gratification delivered at our fingertips. How could we get future generations to embrace their past? Knowing that the most intimate and accurate way to learn about someone is a face to face conversation, I set out to merge our past with modern technology: to create an engaging and interactive way to pass on our life story to our future. My solution is whoowe. Whoowe let’s you quickly and easily create an interactive database for friends, family, and future generations to learn about you by simply asking you questions and getting answers as if they were on a face to face video call with you. Think of how much more you can learn about your ancestors this way. As history is being erased and the wonderful people that made us who we are fade away, our world has become more disconnected with each other. This is a growing problem because knowing where we come from gives us an important foundation to build from. Especially now, amid Covid, families are losing loved ones more suddenly, and isolation is a growing problem. My mission is to positively impact families with a new way to connect to each other and pass on their family history, in an intimate and personal way, beyond anything currently available. I believe whoowe can do that.

There are a lot of websites and other applications that are emerging with the goal to capture life stories and publish them. Some in hard bound books, others audio and/or video style, etc. What prompted your approach?

Most traditional and emerging methods of documenting family history are still somewhat one dimensional, whether that be having a biography written about you, compiling a digital library of images, doing an audio or video interview, etc.. Many of these methods are laborious, time consuming and expensive so most people put them off and few actually get around to doing them. Whoowe provides a fast, fun and economical way to tell your story beyond any of these methods, in the palm of your hand. Using the app for even one minute here and there can quickly become an amazing real life record of yourself, documenting your life as it’s happening. Not a recollection. Whoowe gives you the ability to bring your story to life and gives your future loved ones an experience second only to meeting in person.

I have started capturing my life story as a test of your app and find it quite easy to use, although I admit that I don't like how I look in video, but that's OK (sounds like a personal problem!). Do you have any plans to enhance or make any changes to the user interface in the future?

LOL. Although some video editing may be added moving forward, the goal of whoowe is to pass on the real you to your loved ones, so we recommend being in a well lit environment when answering the questions. The better the lighting, the smoother the appearance. That may make you a bit more comfortable. Also, injecting your personality in your answers is important. Be a little creative and show who you really are. Your loved ones will appreciate it.  As for additional enhancements, absolutely! We have over 2 years of updates and interesting features being planned out as we speak. Moving forward, we will implement deep learning so the app can learn about the types of questions you like to answer and the people, places, and things you tend to talk about. Whoowe will then begin to create custom questions specifically designed for you and your family only. The app will grow with you and help you build an amazing experience to pass on. Other features like memorium assignment, custom photo labeling, in app messaging and comment, direct linking to relevant photos, and much more are on the whiteboard. We want whoowe to be the go to app for creating and passing on your history.

One big question is, how do I ensure that my story will be maintained and available after my passing? Obviously, I won't be around to pay the annual charge.

Currently, if a whoowe account is abandoned but no official cancellation has been made, the account sits dormant in it’s encrypted server for one year from the subscription lapse date. We make several attempts to contact the owner through the email address or mobile number provided but if there is no response, the folder would eventually be purged. We are implementing a memorium option in the next release wherein you can designate an heir to the account as well as a multiyear subscription option. These options would be very economical and the data would be retrievable throughout the extended subscription plus 12 months past the expiration date.

Is there anything else that potential users/customers should know?

Whoowe is a freemium app on Google Play and the App Store, meaning you can download it for free to get started on both Apple and Android devices. You get all the current features to use with some limitations. We are also offering 20% off the premium subscription to kick off the new year. I look forward to any comments, questions, and concerns your readers may have as we are always interested in hearing what we can do to make this app better for everyone. Whoowe was designed to help families celebrate the wonderful people in our lives and pass on their essence as we knew them. Don’t wait until it’s too late to create a record of that special loved one. Do it while they are in good health. Now is the perfect time!

As I said at the outset, I don't normally promote products, but WhooWe is something you should check out and see if it helps you document your life story and legacy.  I'm definitely going to give it a go!

California Online Historical Photos Research

An old proverb states that "the eyes are the windows into the soul." A genealogy corollary is that "a photo is a window into the lives of your ancestors."

I love old photos, whether they are portraits of my ancestors or historical photos for the period when they lived. And it is important to a complete research that one attempts to understand the environment that surrounds our ancestors' lives if one wants to truly appreciate what they went through.

For the state of California, what collections are available for you to browse and/or search online?  Here is a list of sites to start with. Please feel free to add in the comments other online resources that you might be aware of in the state.

Please be aware that there may be very strict rules regarding downloading or other use of the images that you may find. Copyright and other legal protections may be in force. Make sure that you read the limitations of use for any image that you find in these collections and wish to download and/or copy. It is your responsibility to adhere to the rules for all of these collections.

Please note that links to these sites may change in the future. The author (me) will not be constantly checking and updating these links, so if you find a broken link, please use your favorite search engine to locate the new link.

Alaska Online Historical Photos Research

12/29/2020

Picture

An old proverb states that "the eyes are the windows into the soul." A genealogy corollary is that "a photo is a window into the lives of your ancestors."

I love old photos, whether they are portraits of my ancestors or historical photos for the period when they lived. And it is important to a complete research that one attempts to understand the environment that surrounds our ancestors' lives if one wants to truly appreciate what they went through.

For the state of Alaska what collections are available for you to browse and/or search online?

Historical Japanese Internment Camp Newspapers Online

12/29/2020

Picture

When I was an undergraduate at Cal Berkeley in 1966, I had a good friend who was born in one of the Japanese internment camps that were established in the United States during World War 2. She never spoke of it much (at least to me); and since I believe she was born in 1945, she probably didn't remember much of anything personally. Of course, her parents experienced the hardship the most, and I do not know if it was discussed much in her family. I didn't think about it much then, but I recognized later and now that it certainly was one of the major disgraces in America's history, especially since the great majority of those imprisoned were American citizens.

If you are interested, the National Archives has quite a bit of information in a web page entitled Japanese Relocation and Internment During World War II. There also is an abundance of online and other resources if you happen to have ancestors or relatives who were imprisoned or were employed at the camps. Another great source is the Densho Digital Archive. It has the newspapers online, a large variety of documents and photos, and life stories and many family collections are available. This site is a gold mine.

If you are a frequent reader of this website, you know that its main focus is historic newspaper research. What has that to do with the Interment Camps you ask?  Well guess what - the camps had a daily or weekly newspaper! And there was tons of info about the internees as well as those employed.  It was used as a means to disseminate information and also a way for the residents to share information about events, hobbies, sports, etc.

Here are the main links to the newspapers published at each of the ten camps (from the Densho Archives), which were in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Utah and Wyoming:

(Updated December, 2020)

  • Minidoka Irrigator
  • Tulean Dispatch
  • Heart Mountain Sentinel
  • Manzanar Free Press
  • Denson Tribune (Jerome)
  • Gila News-Courier
  • Granada Pioneer
  • Poston Chronicle
  • Rohwer Outpost
  • Topaz Times
  • Newell Star

Did you know that prior to movement of internees to these more permanent camps, there were first "Temporary Assembly Centers", where internees "lived" for several months and where the conditions were deplorable. From Densho: "In spring 1942, the Wartime Civil Control Administration (WCCA) hastily prepared temporary "assembly centers" to house the individuals of Japanese ancestry who were removed from their homes after the signing of Executive Order 9066. The centers were surrounded by barbed-wire fences and patrolled by armed military police. People were housed in animal stalls and barracks with communal bathrooms and mess halls. After spending up to six months in the "assembly centers," Japanese Americans were moved inland to permanent concentration camps."

These Temporary Assembly Centers also had newspapers. Here's a list of those that have been digitized:
  • North Portland Evacuazette
  • Santa Anita Pacemaker
  • Tanforan Totalizer
  • Arbo-Gram
  • Fresno Grapevine
  • Mercedian
  • Pinedale Logger
  • Pomona Center News
  • Salinas Village Crier
  • Stockton El Joaquin
  • Tulare News
  • Turlock TAC
  • Walerga Wasp

So if you have ancestors or relatives who resided or worked in the camps, it would be worth your time to search/research these resources, and you might just find out how they lived while imprisoned there.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

Historical Indigenous and Native American Newspapers Online

12/29/2020

Picture
For those of you who have some Indigenous or Native American "blood" in your family tree, there are many Indigenous American newspapers that have been published over the last two hundred or so years that may help you find some information and stories about your ancestors.

Listed are only those that are available online. As always, there are tons more available via microfilm and in original form via libraries and archives.

Please note that some are free and some require a subscription or a login from a university (or local) library. Some are indexed, and some are not. In the Free Collections you may see some duplicates - this is because the newspaper is provided in multiple online sites, so you may wish to search or browse each of the duplicates.

Nevada Online Historical Photos Research

12/29/2020

Picture

An old proverb states that "the eyes are the windows into the soul." A genealogy corollary is that "a photo is a window into the lives of your ancestors."

I love old photos, whether they are portraits of my ancestors or historical photos for the period when they lived. And it is important to a complete research that one attempts to understand the environment that surrounds our ancestors' lives if one wants to truly appreciate what they went through.

For the state of Nevada what collections are available for you to browse and/or search online?
