To become a successful historic newspaper researcher, you need to make a small investment in time to learn the "tricks of the trade."

Here are 3 downloadable one page Quick Reference Guides that will help you!

9 Steps to Success in Searching Old Newspapers for Your Ancestors

Searching for articles about your ancestors online in old newspapers really is pretty easy.  The problem is that it is so easy that researchers who don't understand the process of getting old newspapers to be scanned and indexed will miss many positive results.  Optical Character Recognition (OCR) often does not pick up the exact letters in a name or word that you are searching, for a variety of reasons.  Anyway, there are a variety of tricks that will greatly enhance your chances of finding articles about your ancestors.

Download this
Quick Reference Guide in pdf format at the link below and apply the tips and you will be more successful.

10 Clever Ways to Find More Ancestor Articles While Searching Old Newspapers

As an aficionado of newspaper research for genealogy and family history, I have done a lot of searching. Most recently it has been of the online variety. One can be quite successful in spite of the limitations of poor quality source material, scanning deficiencies and OCR limitations. The best results are usually because of good planning, rather than simple surname searching and hoping. Here are a few tips and techniques that you can employ to find that elusive ancestor article that you may have been trying to find.

Download this Quick Reference Guide in pdf format at the link below and apply the tips and you will be more successful.

The Best Way to Find Hidden Newspaper Articles

If you search online for newspaper articles, you know that it is often challenging.  This is primarily because OCR is not perfect and that old newsprint can often have creases, tears, ink spots and other errors. This creates an index that often is filled often with a mumbo jumbo of letters that do not result in accurate names and the like when the index is created.  Thus your searches may not include all the articles that you seek.

This can easily be remedied by YOU!  Just change the letters in the search criteria and DELIBERATELY misspell. Refer to this collection of letter pairs as shown in the Quick Reference Guide that you can download below.  You will get much better results, guaranteed.

Download this Quick Reference Guide in pdf format at the link below and apply the tips and you will be more successful.

These will be added to the over 200,000 pages of historic North Carolina newspapers pages already available on the Library of Congress’s Chronicling America newspaper site."

The papers to be added include:

  • The Hillsborough Recorder, Hillsborough
  • The Independent, Elizabeth City
  • Henderson Daily Dispatch, Henderson
  • Tabor City Tribune, Tabor City
  • The Onslow County News and Views, Jacksonville
  • Marion Progress, Marion
  • Old Fort News, Old Fort

Chronicling America Hits 12 Million Page Mark - 3 Free Videos to Celebrate

6/17/2017

PictureSource: Library of Congress
Chronicling America is the definitive places to locate newspaper collections in America. There also is an excellent capability available to search over 12 million digitized newspaper pages from over 40 states.

The 12 million page mark was just met this month, so to celebrate I have embedded 3 YouTube training videos the I created so you can make best use of Chronicling America. Together there are about 25 minutes that you can watch.

There are additional resources that one should know about, besides searching.

The first resource to be aware of is the U.S. Newspaper Directory, which provides detailed information for over 154,000 newspaper publications and what libraries and archives hold them. Since only a small percentage of newspapers are in digital form, this is excellent information for the serious researcher. Below is a video that shows you how to find these offline collections and where to find the microfilms and original newsprint for those collections:

For the second resource, the video below shows you exactly how to find what collections are available for you to search online in the site, including collections by state, by ethnicity, and by language:

And yes, there are over 12 million pages that can be searched online. Below is a comprehensive video tutorial that shows you all the features and options that you need to know about in order to more easily and successfully navigate the site and search for articles about your ancestors:

There are newspapers from over 40 states and the collection is always growing. Some of the states that are represented have additional state and/or county-based collections not affiliated with the Chronicling America site, thus providing even more digitized newspapers to search. And there are also state and county-based digital collections for the states that are not represented in the national Chronicling America collection.

Please take a look at the Newspaper Research Links page in this, The Ancestor Hunt site for the aforementioned additional state resources as well as some special collections, such as German, Catholic, Jewish, Farming, and African-American newspapers.
