For those of you who follow this site, The Ancestor Hunt, you know that I provide an extensive list of links to free online historical newspaper collections, some by state, province, or country.

For the state of Florida that is available at Florida Online Historical Newspapers Summary.

My updates are semi-annual or annual, depending on how much has been changed. For example, my most recent Florida update was in January, 2015.

I want to make you aware of a terrific resource for Florida historic newspapers that can help you.

The University of Florida has created an outstanding resource that is more frequently updated and has some nice features that can help you hone in on your newspaper of choice. And that is the Florida Digital Newspaper Library. It provides some of the historical newspapers for the state available online in a variety of collections (currently about 2 million newspaper pages). There also are a variety of features on the site that are very helpful for online searching.

The features include a map browse and map search capability, where one can select a geographical area from a map and search only the titles available in that selected area.  A very handy feature.

Additional sub-collections include:
  • Digital Military Library
  • Ethnic Newspapers from Florida
  • Historic News Accounts
  • Florida Jewish Newspapers
  • Florida and Puerto Rico Project

The Florida Digital Newspaper Library from the University of Florida  is an excellent resource for finding articles about your Florida ancestors. It also has quite a few newspapers from other states as well. I heartily encourage you to make use of this wonderful site.

For those of you who follow this site, The Ancestor Hunt, you know that I provide an extensive list of links to free online historical newspaper collections, some by state, province, or country.

For the state of Michigan that is available at Michigan Online Historical Newspapers Summary.

My updates are semi-annual or annual, depending on how much has been changed. For example, my most recent Michigan update was in November, 2014.

I want to make you aware of a terrific resource for Michigan historic newspapers that can help you.

Central Michigan University has created an outstanding resource that is more frequently updated and has some nice features that can help you hone in on your county or newspaper of choice.  It also has a very useful map of collections and where they are hosted .And that is the Michigan Digital Newspaper Portal. It provides a list of the online historical newspapers for the state available in a variety of collections (current total of titles about 250).

It lists available newspapers and their collection links alphabetically by county, and also indicates whether the collection is available for free or via a subscription

Furthermore, you can access the Library of Michigan's "family history" of a newspaper, as it's title and frequency may have changed over the years. This is displayed graphically, which is very easy to read. This is quite helpful.

The Michigan Digital Newspaper Portal from CMU is an outstanding resource for finding articles about your Michigan ancestors. I heartily encourage you to make use of this wonderful site.

For those of you who follow this site, The Ancestor Hunt, you know that I provide an extensive list of links to free online historical newspaper collections, some by state, province, or country.

For the state of Ohio that is available at Ohio Online Historical Newspapers Summary.

My updates are semi-annual or annual, depending on how much has been changed. For example, my most recent Ohio update was in December, 2014.

I want to make you aware of a terrific resource for Ohio that can help you.

The state of Ohio has an outstanding resource that is more frequently updated and has some features that can help you hone in on your city or newspaper of choice.  And that is Ohio Memory. It provides the historical newspapers for the state available on Chronicling America, as well as the Ohio Memory collection.

You can sort by City, County, Region, Time Period, and "Special Press".  You can also search for words in the index to titles.  As I mentioned, I am certain that this database is more frequently updated than the articles and lists that I update from time to time.

Furthermore, in their FAQ section, you can download an Excel file that has a list (and links) of other newspapers from the state not available through Chronicling America or Ohio Memory. In total there are about 370 titles available for online research.

There are also lots of other useful resources on this site besides old newspapers.  I heartily encourage you to make use of this wonderful site.

Here is a snapshot of newspapers as they are displayed on the site:

Picture
Memorial Day, initially called Decoration Day, was established in 1868 to create a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States.  "Happy" Memorial Day is not a phrase I would use, but maybe if you took a bit of time with the free links below you could find an article or two or five about your honored ancestor. That would make you happy!

Here are a couple of newspapers honoring this special day.

Historic newspapers are a crucial way of honoring all of our ancestors - on every day of the year.  But in all small and large towns and cities, I suspect that there was a newspaper article about almost all of those who served and paid the ultimate price for their service.

To assist you, here is a list of historic newspaper links for all the U.S. states (and DC) as well as some special collections. Please visit these links and find any and all of your ancestors and the stories of their lives.
