Do you research school records? I'm not talking about yearbooks. Those can be found on the Yearbooks Page. I'm talking about actual school records, such as enrollment, attendance, and grade reports for example. These are interesting source documents because they might record the students age, birth date and location, and possibly their parents names. All great ways to find this information if you haven't found them in other documents about your target ancestor. Besides, finding out your grandmother's grades would be interesting!

The record collection links, listed below, feature school records from the state, and list collections of records that are available for free online.

If you wish to get educated with some basic information regarding what is available and how to navigate your research for school records, you can read these summaries:

  • 5 Quick Tips to Get the Most Out of Education Records

Below is a list of links to free online school record collections for the state;

Note: Some of the links go to sites with not much information and some go to sites with an extensive set of records.

  • Top 10 Strategies for Finding School Records for Genealogy
  • Getting Started With School Records for Genealogy Research

  • Local Newspaper Articles:

Another under utilized genealogy resource is Church Records. We tend to focus our research on civil records, but need to be aware that often church records pre-dated civil records and are a great resource as well. In the BMD Records section of this website there are about 15,000 collections of civil records that are available online. Yes, that's a lot, but we need to also search church records as well.

What can we find in church or synagogue records? Here's just a shortlist of what nuggets we can find:
  • Baptisms and Christenings
  • Marriages
  • Deaths
  • Burials
  • Confirmations
  • Membership lists
  • Church Minutes
  • Church Directories
  • Transfer Letters
  • Bar or Bat Mitzvahs
  • Sunday School lists
  • Church newsletters

In addition, many folks also documented important events in family bibles, so they need to be searched as well if the event information has been digitized.

Here are a couple of articles that you might find useful:

  • U.S. Church Records Research Guide
  • United States Church Records
  • A Genealogist’s Guide to Using Catholic Records in Genealogy Research

There is a large number of Free Online Church Record collections; the links accessible by state below:.

Note: Some of the links listed below take you to a FamilySearch Collection of digital images. Near the bottom of the page under Film/Digital Notes is the name of each sub-collection. If there is a camera icon at the right of the name (in the Format column) then the collections' images are browsable. If there is a camera with a key icon, it is only available at a Family History Center or affiliated library. If there is a film reel icon, then it is only available in microfilm format, not digital.

(Updated March, 2020; recently added links are in BOLD):

  • Nevada, Roman Catholic Church, Inventory of the Church Archives
  • Reno, Trinity Episcopal Church Church and Cemetery Records
  • Storey County, Goldhill Episcopal Church, Marriages

870 Free Online Divorce Record Collections for the United States

3/19/2020

Picture

Divorce records from all over the U.S are sometimes difficult to find online. They are another hidden gem of information that can assist you in advancing your family history and genealogy research.

What can you find in these records? Obviously the dates and location of the divorce proceeding, the date and location of the marriage, the woman's maiden name, names of minor children, and the reason for the divorce. The reason can not only provide another part of your ancestor's story, but also may lead to more clues, especially in the case of desertion, where you may be able to find the location that the "deserting" party moved to.

WARNING: Some of the information in the Divorce Petitions may be difficult to read. There may be shocking claims, especially related to your ancestors' physical and emotional cruelty, or other behavior. Be prepared.

In most cases, I did not include the links to County Courts, where most divorce records are now processed and the documents held. But these divorce documents for most states are partially held in either state archives or county clerk records. So you may wish to avail yourself of these county clerk an court archives, especially those that can be searched online.

Note: Please be aware that if you find a desired divorce record in an index, that the holder of the actual materials (e.g., archive, county court, etc.) may charge a small fee to send you a copy of the material itself.

Below, listed by state are links to divorce records and indexes available for free online.

An old proverb states that "the eyes are the windows into the soul." A genealogy corollary is that "a photo is a window into the lives of your ancestors."

Old photos are important to a complete research, whether they are portraits of your ancestors or historical photos for the period when they lived. And it is important that one attempts to understand the environment that surrounds our ancestors' lives if one wants to truly appreciate what they went through.

So where can they be found?  Obviously the best resource is our own photo albums and those that our relatives possess. But what about other resources? Many archives, historical societies, libraries and genealogical societies have collections of old photos. And in the past few years there has been a massive movement towards making these historical photo collections available online. Some have search capabilities where you can actually put in a surname or a location, name of a building or historical event and find what is available.

During October and November, 2019 I have been adding and updating the links to online photo collections that are available to search for free. There are a total of 3,705 links to online photo archives that I have found for the U.S., with 945 of those links added since the previous update. I will update these lists in approximately six months.

Here is the list of links to these free online collections for each state:

540 Free Online Immigration and Travel Collections for the United States

Immigration Records are some of the richest genealogy record sets and can provide excellent clues as well as data about your ancestors. Specifically, when they came to America, or traveled but did not immigrate. Emigration records can tell you when they left their homeland and can direct you when they might have immigrated, if you are having trouble finding the immigration record.

What types of information are available in these records? First of all, let me clarify that naturalization records are a related type of record. You can discover online naturalization collections and records available via links on this website on the Naturalizations Page. In the Petition for Naturalization record for example, where and when the applicant arrived in the U.S. is stated. And the Certificate of Arrival is another immigration document used in the naturalization process.

Here's an article that will list the information available: 45 Reasons to Research Immigration Records

Regarding immigration - it bears repeating - not EVERYONE came through Ellis island. It was open between 1892 and 1954. Approximately 12 million people came through that immigration station. The highest year was 1907, when just over 1,000,000 people came through. For immigrants landing at U.S, ports in the 19th century and early 20th century, the busiest ports were New York, Baltimore, Boston, New Orleans, and Philadelphia. There were almost 100 ports that were used by immigrants to enter the U.S., via the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Gulf of Mexico, and the Great Lakes.

Below are state by state links to a page that lists links to immigration and travel collections that are available for free to search and browse.

It is also helpful to review emigration records as well. It sometimes occurs that an immigration record is not available online for a variety of reasons, but you might find some useful information from emigration records where one of you're ancestors embarked on their journey to America.

Here are a few free online sites that have online emigration records available.

Denmark - The Digital Danish Emigration Archives
Norway - Digital Archives - Emigrant Records
Germany - Oldenburg Emigrants Database
Ireland - Irish Famine Emigrants 1846-1851 database
Russia - Russians to America Passenger Data File, 1834 - 1897
Germany - Germans to America Passenger Data File, 1850 - 1897
Italy - Italians to America Passenger Data File, 1855 - 1900
Germany - Hamburg Passenger List

Also listed are passenger lists for travel that may not have been immigration related.  I have discovered interesting clues and information from non-immigration travel records as well.

  • Top 10 Strategies for Finding School Records for Genealogy
  • Getting Started With School Records for Genealogy Research

So, what types of records related to schools are maintained and often available?

  • School Census
  • School Catalogs
  • Teacher's Registers
  • Attendance Records
  • Report Cards
  • Class Logs
  • Teacher Rosters
  • School Board Meetings/Reports
  • Academic Team and Class Photos
  • Local Newspaper Articles:
  •  - Graduation Lists
  •  - School Activities
  •  - School Sports
  • Student Newspapers
  • Alumni Directories and Publications
  • Yearbooks
  • Yearbook Indexes

And, what types of information can you derive from these school records?

  • Name (often includes middle name which is useful).
  • Age
  • Physical Characteristics - color/race, disability.
  • Birth Date
  • Current Residence Address
  • Name of Father
  • Name of Mother
  • Occupations of parents
  • Grades
  • Classes Taken
  • Activities (from Photos)
  • Date left school (can help with family residence relocation)

Below is a list of links to free online school record collections for the state;

Note: Some of the links go to sites with not much information and some go to sites with an extensive set of records.
