Picture
For those of you who have ancestors/relatives from the Caribbean island countries, there are over 250 historical newspapers listed below that have been published over the last two hundred or so that may help you find some information and stories about them.

Listed are only those that are available online. As always, there are many more available via microfilm and in original form via libraries and archives.

Please note that these are all free to search. Some are indexed, and some are not. You may see some
duplicates - this is because the newspaper is provided in multiple online sites, so you may wish to search or browse each of the duplicates.

60 Million Historic U.S. Newspaper Pages Now Available from Advantage Archives

3/18/2019

Please note - This article has been updated and you now can get a more current list at:

80 Million Historic U.S. Newspaper Pages Now Available from Advantage Archives

Please refer to the newer article.

For the last 3 years I have been tracking the online collections made available by the Advantage Archives (formerly Advantage Preservation) company, who has contracted with several hundred libraries and other institutions across the U.S. to digitize and host their online newspaper collections.

The great majority of these links have been Incorporated in the state collection summaries found in the Newspaper Links page on this site.

The most recent update from Advantage Archives totals 598 collections from 41 states (plus one Canadian province) and a total number of pages exceeding 60 million!

Some of the collections are small, but others have over 50 different newspaper titles. Although Advantage Archives gets the credit for making these available, much of the credit should go to the individual libraries, library systems, historical societies and other institutions, who do the really hard work of obtaining the funds via grants and other funding sources to digitize these old newspapers and make them available online for their patrons.  In these times where funding for digitization of old newspapers from libraries, archives and other institutions is not easy to get, those of us who want to research our genealogy through newspapers and other documents owe a large debt of gratitude to the librarians and archivists who make all of this possible.  The moral of the story is "Support your local libraries and archives!"

Here is a list by state and county of the online collections available to search for free (with page counts in parentheses and those who allow searching only in the library's location):

The Ancestor Hunt Hits 30,000 Free Online Historical Newspaper Links!

3/14/2019

Picture
The Ancestor Hunt was "born" in the spring of 2012. The first newspaper related blog post was "Use Newspaper Articles to Give Your Website Color", published in May, 2012.

The very first set of links to free online historical newspapers was published in 2014, so we've been updating that list for about 5 years.  The initial list of links to U.S. newspapers, presented by state, had about 10,000 links. It has been updated 2 or 3 times a year since then.

The first update of 2019 pushed our total number of links to over 30,000!

To Access all of the links go to the Newspaper Links menu item at the top of every website page

In case you're interested, the 10 states or provinces that have the largest number of links (in order) are: New York, Iowa, Texas, Quebec, Ohio, Oklahoma, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Indiana.

Now the link collection has added newspapers from Canada as well as a set of 19 special collections, based on ethnicity, language, religion, and other categories, such as farming, labor, alternative press, student newspapers and a few others.

The newspaper focus of this website doesn't just have links. There are 13 individual newspaper research lessons, about 3 dozen Quick Tips, and over 55 Informational Articles About the Whys and Hows of Newspaper Research.

To Access all of the informational articles, tips, and lessons regarding newspaper research, go to the Newspapers menu item at the top of every website page

A few years ago I branched out a bit and added 45 educational videos regarding newspaper research. They can be found on my YouTube Channel.

And further branching out produced the Genealogy and Newspapers Facebook Group, a Flipboard entitled Boost Your Genealogy Research With Newspapers, and unfortunately a defunct Google Plus community.

(Self) Congratulations to the Ancestor Hunt and IMNSHO a stellar achievement of 30,000 free historical links! Let's hope the newspaper digitizing gods smile on us so we can get to 40,000 free links real soon.

310 Free Online Historical Photo Archives from Canada

An old proverb states that "the eyes are the windows into the soul." A genealogy corollary is that "a photo is a window into the lives of your ancestors."

Old photos are important to a complete research, whether they are portraits of your ancestors or historical photos for the period when they lived. And it is important that one attempts to understand the environment that surrounds our ancestors' lives if one wants to truly appreciate what they went through.

So where can they be found?  Obviously the best resource is our own photo albums and those that our relatives possess. But what about other resources? Many archives, historical societies, libraries and genealogical societies have collections of old photos. And in the past few years there has been a massive movement towards making these historical photo collections available online. Some have search capabilities where you can actually put in a surname or a location, name of a building or historical event and find what is available.

During February and March, 2019 I have been adding and updating the links to online photo collections that are available to search for free. There are a total of over 310 online photo collection links that I have found for Canada. I will update these lists again in approximately six months.

Here is the list of links to these free online collections for each province (and the territories):

  • Alberta Online Historical Photos Research

  • Canadian Territories Online Historical Photos Research
  • Manitoba Online Historical Photos Research

One of the main goals for genealogists in searching historic newspapers is to find obituaries. Obituaries are a gold mine of information. They provide death dates and locations, funeral and cemetery information and sometimes more importantly - information about the relatives of the deceased's family and extended family.  This family name information is often not found anywhere else.

During February, 2019 I have been updating the links to online obituary and obituary index collections that are available to search for free. There are a total of 2,280 online database links that I have found for the U.S. Of these, over 700 have been added since the previous update.

Here are alternative means to newspaper searching to find obituary information, listed by the link to each state's list of free links. Please be aware that if you find a desired obituary in an index, that the holder of the actual obituary (e.g., library or genealogical society) may charge a small fee to send you a copy of the obituary itself.

They provide death dates and locations, funeral and cemetery information and sometimes more importantly - information about the relatives of the deceased's family and extended family.  This family name information is often not found anywhere else.

Over the past few decades, thanks to volunteers, librarians and archivists, a great number of indexes to death information and obituaries from newspapers have been provided for free online.  These searchable indexes often provide the location in old newspapers where the obituary can be found. Sometimes the obituary clipping is even provided.

So not only can we search old newspapers for these gems, we can get transcriptions and get directed to the location of the obituaries from these indexes.
