Divorce records from all over the U.S are sometimes difficult to find online. They are another hidden gem of information that can assist you in advancing your family history and genealogy research.

What can you find in these records? Obviously the dates and location of the divorce proceeding, the date and location of the marriage, the woman's maiden name, names of minor children, and the reason for the divorce. The reason can not only provide another part of your ancestor's story, but also may lead to more clues, especially in the case of desertion, where you may be able to find the location that the "deserting" party moved to.

WARNING: Some of the information in the Divorce Petitions may be difficult to read. There may be shocking claims, especially related to your ancestors' physical and emotional cruelty, or other behavior. Be prepared.

In most cases, I did not include the links to County Courts, where most divorce records are now processed and the documents held. But these divorce documents for most states are partially held in either state archives or county clerk records. So you may wish to avail yourself of these county clerk an court archives, especially those that can be searched online.

Note: Please be aware that if you find a desired divorce record in an index, that the holder of the actual materials (e.g., archive, county court, etc.) may charge a small fee to send you a copy of the material itself.

Note: Some of the links listed below take you to a FamilySearch Collection of digital images. Near the bottom of the page under Film/Digital Notes is the name of each sub-collection. If there is a camera icon at the right of the name (in the Format column) then the collections' images are browsable. If there is a camera with a key icon, it is only available at a Family History Center or affiliated library. If there is a film reel icon, then it is only available in microfilm format, not digital. Make sure that you are logged in to the site, so that the collections that are browsable from anywhere will be displayed.

Below are links to the state's divorce record and index collections that are available for free online.

Use Abbreviations in Your Newspaper Searches to Find 50% More Ancestor Articles

2/23/2021

Picture
In old newspapers, abbreviations were used to save space. Abbreviations were used to shorten many words - the most notable being given names as well as addresses.

Remember that your search criteria is just a series of letters that are matched against a search index that was created from the scan and OCR process applied to the subject newspaper page.

Your search index database is not smart enough, for example, to interpret "ave." for the word "avenue."  So if you are entering "335 14th Avenue" - if the search index includes "Ave" the search will not be successful. Therefore you must search both "335 14th Avenue" and "335 14th Ave" to get all possible results.

So when developing your search criteria for both genealogy and newspaper searches, you need to include abbreviations in your repertoire.

Here are some examples of abbreviations that you should employ in your search criteria:

  1. For street names, try "ave" and "avenue" Also "st" and "street". There is a great number of others that you should consider for the "type" of "street such as Wy and Way, Ct and Court, Pl and Place, etc..
  2. For cities, if there is an abbreviation - for example NYC for New York City, or Philly for Philadelphia, try the abbreviation as well as the whole city name.
  3. How about business names - "co" and "company", "inc" and "incorporated", etc.
  4. Given names can provide a great number of increased results by using abbreviations. I have seen as much as 80% more results with given name abbreviations, such as "Wm" for William, or "Jno" for John, or "Jos" for Joseph, "Eliz" for Elizabeth, and "Robt" for Robert, just to name a few. Here is a terrific list from Genealogy In Time.
  5. One often forgotten is "Mrs." Remember that married women were not always addressed with their first name in a newspaper article, but were written as Mrs. Robert Smith for example, regardless if their name was Mildred, Margaret, or Mary.  So incorporate that into your search criteria.
  6. This one is a bit unique.  But if you are searching classified ads, you can always search for a phone number. We certainly don't know the phone numbers from many 20th century ancestors, but if you happen to find it in a telephone directory, you might find classified ads in newspapers by searching that phone number. When I was a kid, our number was Elgin 1-1696, so I would search for "Elgin" as well as "El" before the numbers.
  7. For military titles, try "Capt" for Captain, Col" for "Colonel", Sgt" for Sergeant, etc.

There may be many others, so you need to search for abbreviated words as well as entire words to maximize your search results. My guess is that you can likely increase your pertinent results by as much as 50%.

Free Arkansas Online Cemetery and Burial Records

2/23/2021

Cemetery records and cemeteries in general are a very large part of our family history and is a significant pursuit for many genealogists.  Sometimes, the information on a headstone is the only information available for certain ancestors.

What can you find in these records? How about birth, marriage, and death information and clues to military service, religion, and organization memberships. Location of the burial plot, tombstone inscriptions, cemetery maps, sexton registers, and headstone photos are also generally available.

Here are a few good primers on the benefits of searching cemetery records:

  • FamilySearch - United States Cemeteries
  • A Gravesite Can Reveal Remarkable Details About Your Ancestor, IF You Can Find It: Here’s How
  • Rootsweb - Cemetery Records

I have not performed separate searches from Find a Grave, Billion Graves, or Interment.net by county or individual cemetery as that would be time prohibitive. Those sites are very useful, and you might find references to them from sub-collection links.

Note: Some of the links listed take you to a FamilySearch Collection of digital images. To take full advantage, please make sure that you are logged in to FamilySearch. The results may be different if you are signed in, rather than not.

Below are links to cemetery, burial, and interment records as well as indexes and tombstone inscriptions that are available for free online.

Free Online Divorce Record Collections for the New England States

Below, listed by state are links to divorce records and indexes available for free online.

Free Connecticut Online Divorce Record Collections

Free Alabama Online Cemetery and Burial Records

To take full advantage, please make sure that you are logged in to FamilySearch. The results may be different if you are signed in, rather than not.

Colorado Birth, Marriage, and Death (BMD) Record Links

2/20/2021

Picture

One of the main goals for genealogists is finding birth, marriage, and death (BMD) information about their ancestors.

Over the past few decades, thanks to volunteers, librarians and archivists (as well as the largest of them all - FamilySearch), a great number of indexes to birth, marriage, and death collections have been provided for free online.  These searchable indexes provide specific BMD information, and sometimes scanned images of the actual birth, marriage, and death certificates themselves. These free online collections have hundreds of millions of records in them in total.

There are a great number of online and offline collections that may include birth, marriage, and death information that are not included in the lists below. For example, newspapers, draft registration files, naturalization records, etc. have BMD info. To find out which types of other records may include BMD information, please see:

  • 27 Ways to Find Ancestor Birth Information
  • 22 Ways to Find Ancestors Marriage Information
  • 21 Ways to Find Ancestors Death Information

The lists below are specific birth, marriage, and death indexes and record collections that are available for free online for the state of Colorado.

Note 1: Many of the links listed below take you to a FamilySearch Collection of digital images. In many cases there is a link to the digital collection in the middle of the page, but also near the bottom of the page under Film/Digital Notes is the name of each sub-collection. If there is a camera icon at the right of the name (in the Format column) then the collections' images are browsable. If there is a camera with a key icon, it is only available at a Family History Center or affiliated library. If there is a film reel icon, then it is only available in microfilm format, not digital. Please also note that I have listed below only BMD databases that are accessible digitally from your computer (or tablet/phone)

Note 2: I have included links to Free Ancestry records and indexes. You do not need a subscription, but do need an Ancestry account. Without a subscription you can view indexes. If there is an image associated with a record, in most cases you will need a subscription, but the index does include very usable information.

Free Massachusetts Online Divorce Record Collections

Oregon Birth, Marriage, and Death (BMD) Record Links

2/18/2021

The lists below are specific birth, marriage, and death indexes and record collections that are available for free online for the state of Oregon.

To take full advantage, please make sure that you are logged in to FamilySearch. The results may be different if you are signed in, rather than not.

Below are links to cemetery, burial, and interment records as well as indexes and tombstone inscriptions that are available for free online.

One of the main goals for genealogists in searching historic newspapers is to find obituaries. Obituaries are a gold mine of information. They provide death dates and locations, funeral and cemetery information and sometimes more importantly - information about the relatives of the deceased's family and extended family.  This family name information is often not found anywhere else.

During January and February 2021 I have been updating the links to online obituary and obituary index collections that are available to search for free. There are a total of 3,890 online database links that I have found for the U.S. Of these, about 620 collections have been added since the previous update.

Here are alternative means to newspaper searching to find obituary information, listed by the link to each state's list of free links. Please be aware that if you find a desired obituary in an index, that the holder of the actual obituary (e.g., library or genealogical society) may charge a small fee to send you a copy of the obituary itself.

Over the past few decades, thanks to volunteers, librarians and archivists, a great number of indexes to death information and obituaries from newspapers have been provided for free online.  These searchable indexes or index lists provide the location in old newspapers where the obituary can be found. Sometimes the obituary clipping or transcription is even provided.

Below is a list of links to Idaho obituary indexes, an alternative means to newspaper searching to find obituary information. If the newspaper clippings are available, or if the obituaries are transcribed, they will be denoted. Please be aware that if you find a desired obituary in an index, that the holder of the actual obituary (e.g., library or genealogical society) may charge a small fee to send you a copy of the obituary itself.

The Best Way to Find 20% More Pertinent Newspaper Articles Online

2/12/2021

Picture

Other than making sure that you are searching in the right place geographically and using a date range that fits your ancestors lives, what follows is the Best Way to find more ancestor articles when searching online historic newspapers.

If you do newspaper research online as part of your genealogy and family history pursuits, then you have certainly been puzzled by some of the search results (or lack thereof) that you have received.

Creation of newspaper images and the application of the OCR process does not always result in what you might expect in the index which is used to match against your search criteria.

There is a simple explanation for this, and it all has to do with quality:

  • Quality of the original material - was the newspaper old and brittle when scanned?  Was it yellowed? Ripped or torn? Creased? Did it have dirt on it or lots of ink spots?
  • Was the scan performed that creates the digital image and the index, from the original paper or from a microfilm of the paper, or worse a copy of the microfilm?  Every additional copy or scan degrades the resulting image and when the OCR process is applied, the index suffers.
  • Quality of the OCR software.- some are more accurate than others.
  • Quality of the writing in the original newspaper.  Did the author get your ancestor's name spelled correctly?
  • Quality of the typesetter - did the typesetter get every word from the author set up correctly?

Thus what you are searching probably won't be a perfect digital database that represents what was originally written by the author and newspaper publisher.

What can we do about it?  There are lots of things to try and this article deals with changing the letters in your search criteria.  For example - if the surname you are searching for is "Wilson" and the letter "n" is often converted to the letter "m" in the index from the OCR process, why not search for "Wilsom"?

I guarantee that changing your search letters will lead to an improvement of at least 5 to 10% in search results. I heard from one reader that changing letters and letter pairs got them a 20% improvement!

So what letter pairs are often confused and exchanged in the index? (Scroll to the bottom of this page to download a one page Quick Reference Guide with all of these letter pairs)

  • rn and m  (ar n and em)
  • h and b
  • h and n
  • Capital D and O
  • i, l, 1, /, !, and I are all often interchanged
  • 0 and O
  • c and e and o
  • r and n
  • [, ] and l (el)
  • nl and m  (en el and em)
  • R and B
  • n and ri  (en and ar eye)
  • v and y
  • S and 8
  • S and 5
  • Z and 2
  • G and 6
  • G and O
  • B and 8
  • K and |<
  • Y and V

My suggestion?  Change your search criteria and exchange the letter string you are entering in the search box to include these alternative letter and letter pairs and see what happens.  In other words -  deliberately misspell  the name or word. You will be pleasantly surprised!

Free South Carolina Online Cemetery and Burial Records

2/11/2021

To take full advantage, please make sure that you are logged in to FamilySearch. The results may be different if you are signed in, rather than not.

Below are links to cemetery, burial, and interment records as well as indexes and tombstone inscriptions that are available for free online.
