Online Historical Newspaper Collection of the Day - Europeana Newspapers

One of my two most favorite things about genealogical research is finding stories about my ancestors in old newspapers.

These treasures can be found either via online searches or by browsing microfilm and/or newsprint at libraries and archives.

On this website, I have written profusely about researching old newspapers, and have also kept readers informed as to online links that can be accessed to find ancestor articles - mostly for the U.S. and Canada, but from time to time, links to collections from all over the world.

I don't pass judgment on the features and quality of these online collections, because I leave that up to the reader to decide.

But in the interest of informing readers about collections that I feel are noteworthy, I will be highlighting some of these collections in this series.

Today's collection is the Europeana Newspapers Project. This project is a collaboration between 30 partners - some are libraries providing digital newspaper collections, some are universities and others are providing technology and technical expertise. All from Europe. The initial goal of the project - slated to end a three-year run in 2015, is to provide new technology and an initial collection size of 10 million full text searchable pages. I won't repeat the details of their activities - they can be reviewed by visiting the Europeana Newspapers site. There are presentation slides, a blog and a newsletter full of project information.

In total, there are over 10 million pages available online to search for free. This is a collaborative endeavor from 18 different European countries. Considering the different languages and the large number of partners, this has a very successful outcome. Let's hope that it continues to grow.

This is why I am choosing this collection as the "Online Historical Newspaper Collection of the Day".
