I have written a couple of times about the "super" historic newspaper search engine - Elephind:
- Elephind - One to Watch
- When is Fuzzy Search Too Fuzzy? Elephind Tells Us!
- Elephind Updates Its List of Newspaper Titles (1/28/2014)
I thought I would provide an update. Since the last update, significant additions for Illinois and Virginia have been added, as well as some updates from the Boston College, Kent State and Montana collections.
For those of you who do not know about Elephind - this is from their website:
"The goal of Elephind.com is to make it possible to search all the world’s online historic newspapers from one place. We aren't there yet, but we are adding more newspapers every day."
The operative phrase is "from one place." Our usual online search activities are restricted to ONE collection. Elephind allows you to search MULTIPLE collections at once - a VERY cool feature if you ask me.
Elephind does not allow you to search EVERY online historic newspaper collection out there. They have to have arrangements with the owners of these collections and perform some software magic regarding the collection indexes. But they do have quite a lot of collections that can be searched at once.
You should check out Elephind. I have found articles about my ancestors that I would not have found without Elephind. I don't have any ancestors with Indiana connections but I was able to find two articles for example in the Indiana collection that I never would have searched otherwise.
Here is a recent chart of the collections and statistics:
So, check out Elephind.com - you might find some articles that you may not have otherwise.
